1 dead and 8 injured in the deadly Denver School Shooting

One person was dead and 8 others were injured after two suspected students opened fire at the STEM school in Denver suburb of Highlands Ranch. Both the suspects have been identified and taken into custody. The Douglas County Sheriff’s in a tweet said that the deceased was an 18-year-old male student of the STEM school and the injured were of age 15 or older. Douglas County Sheriff, Tony Spurlock said about 1,850 students attended the school as per their website.

Concerning the two suspects, one is an adult aged 18 whereas other is a juvenile. The adult suspect was identified as Devon Erickson. The department didn’t release the photos so as to maintain the integrity of the investigation.

The incident occurred around seven miles away from the Columbine High School where the 20th anniversary of another deadly shooting was observed. The suspects walked into the school and engaged students in two separate classrooms. Over the next five minutes shots were fired.

John Castillo, the father of the victim called his son to be one of the “best kids in the world”. He further said “I wish he had gone and hid, but that is not his character, he liked to help and protect people. Kendrick Castillo, the 18-year-old deceased, was killed while tackling the suspect. Kendrick was his parents’ only child.

The two suspects accused of carrying out mass shootings in a Denver-based school made their first appearance in court.

One of the survivors said that Castillo lunged at the suspect who shot Castillo. The victim was an avid member of his school’s robotics team and he had only three days left before he left for graduation.

Highland Ranch schools went into lockdown for several hours after the incident. The STEM school was to remain closed for the rest of the week after the deadly incident.

The White House offered a message of condolence saying “Our prayers are with the victims, family members, and all those affected by today’s shooting”.

Back in 1999, two Columbine students had killed around 13 people before committing suicide in what remains to be the deadliest school shootings in the US history.
