12 Injured in a grenade blast outside a mall in Guwahati

Close to 12 people were injured in a deadly blast which occurred outside a mall in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Two people have been arrested in connection with the blast and have been sent to police custody for 10 days. The culprits have been identified as Pranomoy Rajguru and an actress.

Out of the 12-injured people two were Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel in the deadly grenade attack reportedly carried out by ULFA(I) militants. Five of them are undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical college and hospital. The condition of one of them is serious. Two others suffered eye injury and were taken to the eye care hospital.

Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State for Health said that the state will bear the expenses of their treatment. He also visited the hospital to enquire about the health of the injured. Several victims are yet to be identified. The place where the blast occurred is at the heart of the city and next to Shraddhanjali Kanan park where a large number of people usually gather. Guwahati Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar said that two people riding a motorcycle hurled grenade in front of the shopping mall.

Saikia said that militant groups like ULFA(I) and National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit have suffered a major jolt because of the joint operations carried out by security forces. Several local TV channels reported that ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah had claimed the responsibility of the grenade blasts but the police refused it saying that a detailed investigation will ascertain the claim.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal strongly condemned this incident and has ordered to carry out a detailed and a speedy investigation in relation to the case and arrest the perpetrators. The Chief Minister also asked the Home department to strengthen the intelligence gathering system.

An inquiry panel has been set up as a part of the investigation process. Sniffer dogs and forensic experts have been deployed at the location for further investigation.
