14 people died and 50 Injured as a tent collapses in religious event in Rajasthan

Messages of shock, grief and condolences started pouring in after the tragic incident in Rajasthan in which 14 people were killed while 50 others were injured as a tent collapsed during a religious gathering in Barmer district of Rajasthan. The tragedy occured when “Ram Katha” was organized at a school ground during a religious event. The pandal was uprooted by strong winds as hundreds of devotees had assembled around it when the Pandal collapsed as a result of which people who were sitting under it got trapped.

The injured have been rushed to the nearby government and private hospitals in Barmer and neighbouring Jodhpur district. There were also reports of people getting electrocuted as an electric wire fell over them. The breaking of the electric wire in the rain led to stampede in which some people were electrocuted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in the form of a tweet calling this incident an unfortunate one. He also wished for a speedy recovery of the injured.

Expressing his grief over the incident in the form of a tweet, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind said that he was sad to hear about the loss of lives due to the collapse of the Pandal.

Several ministers like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raja, Congress President Rahul Gandhi also expressed their condolences.

Around 1000 people, most of them been senior citizens, had gathered to listen to the Ram Katha when storm played havoc. Most of the deceased were from the Barmer district. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced Rs. 5 Lakh to the kin of the deceased and Rs. 2 lakh to the kin of the injured. He has asked the Jodhpur Divisional Commissioner to it.
