2.6 degrees in Delhi: Homeless woman found dead on a pavement under one blanket

Police found a woman’s body under just one blanket on the pavement close to the Mandi House Metro station, in Delhi. Night temperature plummeted to 2.6 degrees Celsius yesterday, the lowest in the last four years.

The body of the woman, around 40s, also bore superficial burns, but DCP Verma said that the injuries seemed old and were unlikely to have contributed to her death. The most likely reason for her death appears to be the biting cold. Police found a packet of food, possibly given to the woman by someone, next to her body.

The woman named as Rajputi or Lajwanti was frequently seen under Tilak Bridge but due to construction had moved on the road. It was her third night on the pavement. She had no family.

Actually, police are looking around for homeless people in New Delhi neighbourhoods so that they can be moved to the closest shelter homes. It was during one such patrolling session that a police team spotted the woman under a blanket.

“She seems to have died in her sleep. There were no signs of struggle,” said DCP Verma.
