Protests in Punjab and across Delhi against SC/ST Act
In New Delhi people are expressing their huge discontent against the Supreme Court order on the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act (SC/ ST). Protests have been called by the Dalit organisations and are held accross Punjab and other states. Police officers have been deployed across Punjab as the state has the highest Dalit population. Schools have been shut down today and public transport services have been suspended. Moreover internet services have been brought down and will be released shortly. As a consequence of instabilities in the state, CBSE exams in the state had been forwarded and new dates shall be announced shortly.
As a consequence of the protest, the government has decided to file a review petition a review petition to the Supreme Court according the SC/ST. According to Law Minister Ravishankar Prasad, the petition will be filed this Monday 2 April 2018. The SC/ST Protection Act is still put to controversy as while Dalit organisations oppose to it, some members of the Central government still favour SC/ST Act.
