Opposition organisations protest over Cauvery issue claim constitutional amendment

Tamil Naidu: Opposition protested over the Cauvery issue by forming a human chain to demand constitutional amendment. Protestors call for the amendment of the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee.

The protests involved different parties but the opposition was held by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

While a judgement was pronounced over the Cauvery case on 16 February by the bench of judges comprised Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and AM Khanwilkar, the Cauvery issue remains unsolved. Water dispensing is in fact a big issue between the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry and Karnataka. Farmers claim that water distribution is unequal and make it almost impossible to sustain their families. Poor distribution of water and long droughts in some regions have led over the recent years in an increase in farmers’ suicide that cannot earn a living and repay their loans.

The Court will hear the case on 3 May 2018.
