Union Minister S. Ganwar: ” Rape is unfortunate but we should not make a big deal out of it.”

New Delhi: Amidst mounting pressure to advocate rape cases in India, Cabinet Members have taken the initiative to strengthen the POSCO Act. However, the responses of Union Minister Santosh Gangwar had not been welcomed. The latter stated that rape cases are unfortunate but should not be treated as a big issue. He underlined that in a huge country as India, one or two rape cases should not been given such importance. He further added that rape could not be stopped and is a vain issue.

India has faced waves of protests over the past weeks, from organisations calling for pressing measures against child rapists and abductors. The list of child rape cases seems endless as new reported cases continue to add to the outrage over the Kathua gang rape case. The cabinet met Saturday to take measures to implement death penalty for those who raped children below 12 years old.

While some people maintain that death penalty does not always act as a deterrent to rape, others welcome this decision as a move from the government to address the rape issue in India.
