State radio announced: Angola President fires army chief and spy boss

Angola President Joao Lourenco on Monday announced in a presidential ruling on national radio that he has fired over twenty officials including two security chiefs.

Army Chief General Geraldo Sachipengo Nunda and foreign intelligence Chief André de Oliveira Sango are the two affected officers. Reports specify that about twenty other officials were affected by the latest purge.

Last month before his sacking, the head of the armed forces was named by the prosecutors as a suspect in an investigation of a scheme to negotiate with a fraud international credit line of $50 billion.

He was named along with son of the former president Jose Filomeno dos Santos and a former governor of the central bank, Valter Filipe da Silva.

Oliviera Sango, the now former spy boss, a long-time Dos Santos loyalist, was made foreign intelligence chief over a decade ago.

Political and security watchers put forward that the latest purge by Lourenco is a continued effort to declare his power in the security sector of the oil-rich southern African nation.

The firing of the army chief shows Lourenco’s tough attitude against corruption since he took office in September 2016.

Les courants d’eau dans les rues de Saint-André étaient si forts que les voitures ont été emportées. Un internaute envoie ces images en critiquant l’absence d’interdiction de circuler de la part de la Préfecture.
