3 year jail sentence for Indian official for sharing confidential information with Pakistani boyfriend

Former Delhi Police Commissioner Madhuri Gupta, who has served in the High Commission of Islamabad, has been convicted to 3 years in jail, on Friday 18th May for having links with Pakistan’s ISI officials. The police said in its charge sheet in 2010 that one of the Pakistani officials was in a relatioship with Madhuri and that they had even planned to get married. However, in court, Madhuri Gupta said that she is innocent and the accusations levelled at her, are all false.

Madhuri was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on April 22, 2010 for sharing sensitive information with Pakistani officials and staying in touch with two ISI officials Jamshed and Mubshar Raza Rana.

Discarding the ex-diplomat’s flimsy claim of innocence while announcing the sentence, the judge pointed out that in an email Madhuri sent to Jamshed, she promised to give the latter all information about hydro power projects of India in Jammu and Kashmir. Undoubteldly, this could have led to serious threat to the security of India. Madhuri Gupta was charged with the breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and various other provisions of the Official Secrets Act.
