India : Swiss tourist gang raped in front of husband
On Friday night of 18th May, after visiting the famous Taj Mahal Palace in Agra, the victim and her husband cycled back to a small village in Central India where they decided to have a stopover till morning. They were busy setting up their tent in a remote forested area of Madhya Pradesh when 6 men attacked the couple, tied the husband and raped his wife in his presence.
The rapists have been arrested by the local police and they have also confessed to their heinous deeds. Aged between 20 and 25, they all live in a village near the crime scene. They have been charged them with rape… and theft! Indeed, the sex offenders also robbed the couple of their belongings. The police retrieved a laptop, a mobile phone and a sum of 10,000 INR ($ 185) from the assailants.
This tragedy comes as a rapidly growing number of Indians increasingly demonstrating against sexual abuse of women and girl children across the country. The protest was sparked by the gang rape on 29th December 2012 of a 23-year-old Indian student in New Delhi who died of her injuries. That sexual assault, in the presence of the young woman’s boyfriend, who had been beaten, caused an uproar in India but also in the world. The perpetrators of the gang rape have long since been arrested, BUT according to many, it’s as if the victim never got enough justice for such a brutal violation of her body and resulting death. Did she? NO !!!
