Athiya Shetty in the skin of a Kashmiri footballer in upcoming Biopic
Despite her first two films failing to garner much attention for her on the box office, Sunil Shetty’s daughter Athiya is all set to impress the audiences and silence her critics as she prepares for, what can turn into, a career-altering role.
She will portray the Kashmiri female footballer Afshan Ashiq, who is the captain and goalkeeper of the Jammu and Kashmir women’s football team. A video Afshan Ashiq pelting stones at the J&K police went viral. This garnered the attention of J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, who decided to pitch in and do her bid to promote Ashiq and women’s football in her state.
At only twenty-two years old, Ashiq has inspired the biopic which will be titled “Hope Solo”. The film will be directed by Manish Harishankar and written by Saiwyn Quadras who is famous for hits like “Mary Kom” and “Neerja”. “Unlike most Indian biopic, this film will not be a success story but an emotional journey that portrays one girl’s fight against a system. It will focus on several movements like Khelo India, a national program for the development of sports in the country, and the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme for women empowerment. Afshan’s dream has always been to be a national-level goalkeeper and represent India in international womens’ football. The film will focus on these aspirations,” a source revealed.
Athiya Shetty herself is an avid football fan and even played as a student. Her training for the role has already begun and her prep will include adapting the Kashmiri accent and learning the language.
The producer, Sanjay Grover (Gulshan Grover’s son) plans to take this film to a global market.
