Akshay Kumar’s Gold and John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate have given the highest grossing Independence Day release date of all time! Both films represent a true patriotic spirit yet they couldn’t be more different. While Gold is a period sports drama, set in 1940s, based on a motivational spirit and the game of hockey; Satyamev Jayate is a contemporary anti-corruption vigilante action flick that seems to be rooted in the phrase “fight fire with fire”.
Although Akshay has a slight upper-hand when it comes to the patriotic, national spirit theme, the overall genres are quite familiar to both actors whether it is Akshay with his motivational message or John in an action hero avatar. Interestingly, both the films rely on their leading male’s star power as Mouni Roy (Gold) and Aisha Sharma (Satyamev Jayate) are new faces in the film industry. When it comes to the directors, whether it is Gold’s Reema Kagti or Satyamev Jayate’s Milap Zaveri, both are quite new to the genre.
Despite the equal grounds on which both films stand, Gold is clearly the winner at the box office. It opened at a staggering 25.25 crores on 15th August and has been one of the biggest openers of the year so far. John’s vigilantism wasn’t too far behind, as his movie managed a cool 18.50 crores on the first day as well.
Satyamev Jayate’s cringe-worthy dialogues, clichéd plot and gruesome scenes aren’t well-received by the critics whereas Gold’s authentic portrayal of the time period, fresh acting and emotional patriotic moments give the film a big thumbs-up.
Gold vs. Satyamev Jayate: There’s a clear winner in this race of patriotism
