32 people were killed while 28 others were injured as a bus fell into a 500-feet deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu. The private bus was on its way from Banjar to Gadagushani area. Prima facie, it seems as if the accident was a result of overloading and negligent driving. The 42-seater bus was repeatedly carrying close to 60 people.The driver seemed to have lost control of the vehicle while taking a sharp turn.
The accident took place at around 4.30 pm at Doth Mor which is about two kilometers from Banjar town. Local officials rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation with the help of nearby villagers. It was found that most of the victims were either school going students or college going students. The injured have been taken to the civil hospitals in Banjar and Kullu.
Teams of district administration, district disaster management along with the doctors and ambulances were rushed to the spot to initiate the rescue and relief operations. Most of the passengers were residents of Kullu district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the deaths and said in a tweet that he was deeply saddened by the accident. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and Governor Acharya Devvrat also expressed grief at the loss of life of over 32 people. Chief Minister said that a magisterial enquiry has been ordered in this case and has asked the administration to provide the best medicare to the injured people.
It was found during investigation that the crash barriers were missing from the spot where the bus skidded into the gorge. Himachal Pradesh has been prone to such deadly incidents as a result of rugged terrain.
The Kullu district administration has offered an immediate relief of Rs. 50,000 to the kin of the deceased and injured.
