Inside Cooking Ep 13: Buttermilk Pie

This old-fashioned buttermilk pie is wonderful to freeze and to have on hand for unexpected guests! Light and silky smooth, this creamy custard-based pie is a unique recipe with a sweet, fresh flavour.

Ingredients (for 8 persons)

3 large eggs
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/8 tablespoon freshly grated nutmeg1 (9 inches) unbaked pie crust

Buttermild Pie preparation


(Preparation time: 15 mins, total time: 2hrs)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees (175 degrees C).

Beat eggs until frothy; add butter, sugar and flour. Beat until smooth.

Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice and nutmeg; pour into pie shell.

Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until centre is firm, shielding edges with aluminium foil after 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack, and cool 1 hour.
