PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Memorial on National Police Commemoration Day

PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the memorial for the Khaki forces on the eve of National Police Commemoration Day. The National police memorial is a 30-feet-tall and 238-tonne heavy granite sculpture honouring the martyrs. PM Modi dedicated the memorial and a newly-built museum to Khaki forces of the nation.

The memorial was built a few years ago but has been refurbished and the central structure has been revamped by replacing the old rock structure.

The 30-feet-tall granite sculpture, the underground museum and a wall of valour containing the names of over 34,800 martyred personnel were unveiled during the program held to mark the National Police Commemoration Day. The museum which is built underground in the premises of the national police memorial showcases artefacts, gear of state and central police forces.

The PM was saluted when he arrived at the memorial in central Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area. The PM was received by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh before the inauguration ceremony. He then led the group of ministers to put wreaths on the memorial in the honour and memory of the martyred jawans who laid their lives fighting for the nation.

Several senior leaders were present at the function which included Kiren Rijiju, minister of state in the Home Ministry, Ajit Doval, the National security advisor along with the personnel of Central Armed Police Forces and state police forces.

Rajiv Jain, the director of Intelligence Bureau said that close to 34,844 police personnel from the central and state police forces had laid their lives for the country since independence. 414 people sacrificed their lives last year.

National Police Commemoration Day is celebrated on October 21 of every year to pay homage to the 10 policemen killed in a fight against the Chinese troops in 1959 in Ladakh’s Hot Spring area.PM Modi accused the former Congress government of delaying to build the memorial saying that the memorial could have been built several years ago had the government decided wholeheartedly.

He even questioned as to why it took such a long time (70 years) to build the memorial
