Things to know about G-20 Summit

The annual summit of Group of 20 nations referred to as G-20 summit is underway in Osaka, Japan. One of the main agendas is the ongoing trade war between China and the United States which are two of the biggest economies of the world. The G-20 summit is an international leaders’ forum comprising of participants from 19 countries and European Union. One of the primary aims is to promote international financial stability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that terrorism, climate change and global recession are the major challenges that the world is facing today. Calling an end to all the mediums which support terrorism and racism, Modi said, Terrorism is the biggest threat to humanity. It not only kills innocent but also disturbs the economic and social development.

US president Donald Trump congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his recent Election victory and said that the two countries would work together on several areas including military. Donald Trump, through a tweet, hit out at Modi-ruled government for high tariffs imposed on US products and said that these are unacceptable and must be withdrawn.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held bilateral meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in order to discuss ways to diversify and deepen India-Germany ties.

PM Narendra Modi held trilateral meeting with US president Donald Trump and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. Modi tweeted that the Japan-America-India trilateral was a productive one and he had extensive discussions on the Indo-Pacific region, improving connectivity and infrastructure development. He also thanked Trump and Shinzo Abe for sharing their views as well.

This was the second Japan-America-India trilateral meeting. The discussion was focused on how the three countries can together work together towards an open, stable & rule-based Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met China’s President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders during the G-20 Summit which was held on June 28-29.

This was Modi’s sixth G-20 summit.
